Griffith is set to host Australia’s finest emerging opera stars next month when Opera Australia’s Oz Opera performs Verdi’s La Traviata at Griffith Regional Theatre.
This enthralling tale of passion and heartbreak has captivated audiences around the world and now Griffith theatregoers can experience it for themselves on August 12.
La Traviata (“the fallen woman”) is the story of the courtesan Violetta, who attempts to escape the gilded cage of her life with her young lover, Alfredo. Set in a fantasy version of Toulouse-Lautrec’s 1890s Paris, this stunning new production from Oz Opera is fully staged with lavish sets and costumes. Much of La Traviata’s popularity stems from its devastatingly romantic music, which featured in award-winning films Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Pretty Woman.
Paige Campbell, Marketing Coordinator at the theatre, is impressed with the community response so far.
“We have already sold lots of tickets and many people are booking in groups making it a special night out at the theatre with friends,” she says.
The superb cast of 10 singers includes Annabelle Chaffey and Leah Thomas in the roles of Violetta and Jason Wasley; and Ben Rasheed as Alfredo. Sung in English to make it accessible for all audiences, it is accompanied by a chamber orchestra of 11 musicians, conducted by Ollivier-Philippe Cunéo.
Director Rachel McDonald says the response from local communities was overwhelming during Oz Opera’s last tour, with sold-out performances in many regional towns.
“Oz Opera’s first-ever tour of La Traviata will appeal to audiences everywhere,” she says.
“It is a powerful story with characters that everyone can relate to, whether they are experiencing opera for the first time or the hundredth.”
The theatre is holding a pre-performance talk from 6.30 to 7pm, conducted by Oz Opera, to give patrons the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of opera, the music and a setting of the La Traviata scene. The show will start at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the Theatre Box Office on 6962 8444.
Griffith Regional Theatre partnered with Pinnacle Accounting and Centrepoint Apartments to bring this show to Griffith.
