With students heading back to school next week, drivers are being reminded to pay special attention when travelling on roads used as school bus routes.

Griffith City Council road safety and traffic officer Greg Balind says poor weather in winter means it’s vital for drivers to watch out for children crossing roads near school bus stops. Drivers should also watch out for children making their way to school on foot or on bicycles.

"Visibility can be poor this time of year, particularly in the mornings, so drivers should make themselves visible to pedestrians by turning on their headlights," Mr Balind says.

“Parents and carers also have an important part to play in the safety of children travelling to school.

“With poor visibility caused by fog, rain or failing light, all pedestrians and cyclists should be aware of making themselves more noticeable to drivers by wearing reflective or light clothing to make sure they are seen.”

While Term 3 officially commences on Monday, July 19, many schools have a student free day on the first day of term. Drivers are cautioned that all 40kph school zones will still be in operation and subject to police enforcement on Monday, regardless of whether or not schools have student free days.

School zones operate from 8 to 9am and 2.30 to 4pm on gazetted school days. Speeds are limited to 40kph during these times and higher demerits and fines are applicable to any drivers speeding within these zones.
