Griffith City Council has signed it’s biggest ever contract, setting in motion the building of Griffith’s new $20 million Water Reclamation Plant.

Mayor Mike Neville, council general manager Peter Brooks and Haslin Constructions directors John Hastings and Colin Woods met for the signing of the landmark document that puts into effect a project that has been three years in the planning. The project is expected to begin next month.

Haslin Constructions Pty Ltd is an award-winning company with over 140 construction projects under its belt since its inception in 1991. The company’s previous work on the Lake Macquarie Reservoir and Pumping Stations received the Excellence in Civil Construction Award from the Civil Contractors Federation in 2010. Mr Hastings says his company is dedicated to ensuring Griffith’s plant will be equally worthy of an award.

Cr Neville has congratulated Mr Hastings and Mr Woods on their work so far and says he looks forward to seeing the project’s progression.

“The project will offer the community a state-of-the-art facility that will meet the future needs of Griffith and offer us an additional resource by re-use of water,” he says.

“This is something that my grandfather discussed when he was Shire president in the early 1960s, so to see it finally going ahead is a big step for Griffith.”

Mr Brooks says the project was discussed with him on his first day at the council, more than six years ago, adding that it’s good to see it get off the ground.

“It’s a huge project and the collective work of council’s Water and Sewerage Department and Haslin Constructions has shown that we have the best people possible working on it,” he says.

The civil works will cost in excess of $20 million and will result in an effluent treatment plant using the latest technology, based around the use of membranes to filter the effluent waste to the highest standard. Works are expected to be completed by November 2011.
